All professional musicians, whether they're playing jazz, rock, bluegrass and country music, have spent their first years of practicing bent over a half speed record player. You might be wondering what does this have to do with trying to learn to play the guitar by ear. As you will learn from this article, it actually has a lot to do with it.

Slowing Things Down

In order to learn to play the guitar by ear you have to begin with learning the melodies, chords and leads from a recording. To be able to do this, you've got to slow them down a bit. Some exceptionally gifted people with really good ears are able to learn to play some slow songs just by listening to them at a normal speed. However, even those folks have problems with learning faster melodies and need to slow things down.

Most of us can't even figure out slow songs just by listening to them at a normal speed. While most of us can match a note with our guitar or voice if it's the only thing we're hearing, we tend to get confused when lots of notes are played together. If you slow the music down, we can separate the notes and play them piece by piece until we learn the whole song.

Slowdown Technology

Years ago, the slowing down process was done using half speed tape recorders. However, as you slowed the music down, the pitch dropped. By the time you got to half speed, the pitch had already dropped a lot. Anyway, for most of us, half speed is still to fast. You will probably need a 1/10 speed in order to figure out certain pieces.

Fortunately, nowadays everything has been made easier with the aid of digital slowdown technology. You can now slow the melody down as much as you want, without having the pitch dropping.

Do You Really Have to Put So Much Work Into It?

You're probably thinking that spending so much time on figuring out each note yourself must be awfully hard. Why not just buy a book and get over this part?

Of course, you can buy a book, but, as it usually happens with all music theory books, it will probably be gathering dust on your bookshelf forever. If you really want to learn to play the guitar by ear, you will have to get involved in the process and figure out the notes from a melody yourself.

While figuring out note by note on your own is the best way to go, consulting a transcription book from time to time while you're trying to figure out the music is also good. Some beginner guitar players who want to learn to play the guitar by ear learn from a transcription book first and then play along with the original recording at a slower pace to get the rhythm.

You should learn to play the guitar by ear just because this way you get the most fun. Playing the guitar should be fun and this is why you should have started to learn it in the first place. However, the more you time you invest into the learning process by getting involved in practical activities, the faster the progress.

Guitar Lesson: Learn To Play Guitar Tab Solo Morning Has Broken

You don't need to know guitar sheet music to learn to play guitar melodies. Let's learn Morning Has Broken with guitar tab!

"Morning Has Broken" is a Christian hymn. Cat Stevens has recorded a popular version of the song.

Here is the first verse:

Morning has broken, like the first morning Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird Praise for the singing, praise for the morning Praise for the springing fresh from the world

As I mentioned we will not use guitar sheet music notation. Many people find it hard to read sheet music on guitar.

In order to learn to play guitar melodies we will use another notation system called tablature.

Tablature or guitar tab is a form of musical notation, often with numbers and letters, which will tell you where to place your fingers on the guitar fretboard in order to play a melody.

In this article I will use a type of guitar tab notation with numbers only. The more common guitar tab staff notation you will find on my site.

Let?s take a look at your guitar!

The six strings on your guitar is numbered from the one with the highest pitch. This string is called the first string.

In order for me to tell you how to play the melody on your guitar I will write down which fret to press down with your left hand and which string to play.

If I write 31 it means that you are to press down the third fret on the first string. The first number indicates the fret to press down and the next number the string.

01 means: play the first open string. This means that you play the first string without pressing down a fret.

The first part of Morning Has Broken with guitar tab and lyrics looks like this:

Morning has broken, like the first morning

35 24 03 12 32 02 23 03 23 02 23 03

You will start with the note C here notated 35. That is, press down the third fret on the fift string.

In this type of guitar tab notation you will not have an indication as to the length of the notes. I suggest that you sing the lyrics in order to feel how the melody is to be played.

In this guitar lesson we will not deal with how to play the strings with your right hand fingers. I suggest that you play the strings with you right hand thumb or some other way you choose.

What about your left hand? You can play the notes with your index finger but I suggest that you assign the notes on the first fret to your index finger, the notes on the second fret to your middle finger and so on.

It might be a little bit difficult at first but in the long run you will find it easier to play melodies with these left hand fingerings if you are persistent!

I promised you that you could learn Morning Has Broken on your guitar without sheet music and now you have accomplished this and I have kept my promise. Congratulations!

Here are some of the more common ways to learn to play the guitar. Try each method to see what works best for you.

Group Lessons: Learning guitar in a group setting can be less intimidating for the beginning musician. You not only get the benefit of having a teacher to help you along you can often judge your progress by where the other students are in the class. The worst part about taking guitar lessons in a group setting is the teachers time is divided so you may not get as much attention as you might need.

Private Lessons: This is the best way to learn to play the guitar if you can find the right teacher. The instructor can gauge your progress each week and custom design your lessons for you. You have your teachers' undivided attention and you can ask anything you feel is not clear.

CD Lessons: There are many instruction CDs available in nearly any style you can think of. The advantage of this style of learning is you can listen to the CD as many times as you want. Any part that is not clear can be replayed as many times as needed. The disadvantages include the songs may not be the ones you desire to learn and the instruction is more general without any way of knowing where you are in your musical journey.

DVD Lessons: Instruction on DVD includes all the good and bad points of the CD instruction. The number one advantage to learning guitar by watching DVD video is you can see what the instructor is doing. Visual learning goes a long way toward answering the questions burning in your mind.

Music Books: Music books are a time-honored way to learn how to play the guitar. You can find more books on more different styles than most any other way to learn. You need to be proficient in reading music if you do not know the song you are learning. Most folks have a hard time getting the song right if they do not know the song they are learning.

Internet: In these modern times the Internet is a wonderful resource in learning to play the guitar. There are many websites that will show you how to play the exact notes your guitar hero plays. Membership sights are plentiful where for a small monthly fee you can learn most any style you choose.

Friends: Do not overlook your guitar playing buddies. Most guitar pickers are a friendly bunch who will be more than happy to help you along.

Slowing Down Recordings: You can purchase software that slows down your favorite recordings. This allows you to hear each phrase at a speed where you can pick out the different notes. This is a great way to learn to play.

Playing With Other People: The very best way to learn to play the guitar is to get together with other people and play. This is the fastest way to learn. You will learn more by getting out and playing with other people than you ever will sitting at home playing by yourself.

The method you decide to use to learn to play guitar is up to you. Try to practice four or five times a week for 30 minutes at a time and you will be playing guitar before you know it.

HOW TO LEARN TO PLAY THE GUITAR ONLINE WITH A FREE LESSON

How do you first go about learning the guitar?

Seems like a fairly silly question, when you have already decided that playing a guitar is what you want to do. But there are countless different methods, by many different so called 'teachers'. This makes it difficult for the person who is starting out for the first time.

How much does it cost? Can I learn online? Which method is best? Who can teach me quickly? Is it fun?

Just some of the questions I hope to be able to help you with.

Until recently, the only way to learn was by going to a teacher, or having someone come to you. Whether this was in a group setting or individually, it still meant having to arrange things beforehand. One problem associated with this is the high cost of lessons, as much as $50 each or even more. If your teacher is an 'all-rounder', someone who teaches different classes, such as piano, brass, woodwind for example, are they able to give you specialized knowledge within the field you are trying to learn? How quickly you can learn will depend on the number of lessons you can fit in over a set period of time.

Well then, how about learning to play the guitar online? Firstly, you can go at your own pace, this could be every day, once a month, or somewhere in-between. I would suggest 20-30 minutes a day rather than 2 or 3 hours once a week, or it could drag out and you run the risk of losing motivation. Secondly, you need to pick the course that is going to suit you best. I hope to save you research and review time by suggesting one for you. Thirdly, you don't want to spend money on unnecessary lessons. we'll concentrate on guitar and guitar only. Don't forget this will include things like ear-training, an important part of any music ability, and finger exercises.

Find a Good Teacher - There is no substitution for a good guitar teacher. You can buy all the books and videos you want, but in order to really become a good guitar player, you need to learn from a pro. A professional guitar teacher has the experience and wisdom necessary to teach you how to become a proper guitar player. Books, videos, and the Internet for that matter, lack in their ability to provide you with feedback and advice. A good guitar teacher will correct you if you are doing something wrong so that you don't form bad habits or techniques. A good guitar teacher will also encourage you when you are doing something right.

Do Not Get Discouraged - When first learning the guitar, or any instrument for that matter, you may find yourself getting discouraged, or perhaps saying to yourself "this is just too difficult". You may find yourself practicing the same song or chords over and over again, and never getting any better at it. Do not let this discourage you. Sometimes are brains just need a little rest, or need to be occupied with something else. Take a break and come back to your practice with a fresh mind.

Practice - The more often that you practice your guitar the more familiar you will become with the instrument. Your playing will become easier over time. Try and free up at least 20 minutes of time every day to practice your guitar. Find a time and location where you know you will not be interrupted. Interruption can really kill your concentration and snap you out of a good rhythm. Warm your hands and stretch your fingers before you play. Talk with your guitar teacher to develop the best practice exercises that are right for your style of playing.

Create an effective practice schedule - The length of your practice is not necessarily the most important thing. Usually it is the quality of your practice that is most important. Make sure your guitar teacher is giving you a well-rounded approach to guitar playing and helping you make the most of your practice sessions.

Slow Down - One great bit of advice with your practicing; don't play too quickly! Many new guitar players will rush through a lick or a song in the beginning, trying to play it exactly as they hear it and only wind up butchering it. Before you can play anything correctly, you must learn to slow down and play it right at a much slower speed. You can then slowly increase your speed as you improve.

Watch your posture - Guitar playing should not be extremely painful and uncomfortable. If you find yourself with various aches and pains in your shoulders, your neck, your back, etc., chances are you are not in a correct playing posture. Ask your guitar teacher to demonstrate a proper playing posture, then do your best to stick to it. Tell your teacher to observe you during practice and correct you whenever you fall out of the correct posture.

Get a metronome - A very important part of guitar playing is the ability to keep good timing. An instrument, which will help you become better at timing, is called a metronome. You can purchase this at any guitar center. When working with a metronome, in the beginning, you should start off at a slow speed. This will help you build your muscles and develop better control and good playing habits.

Change your strings - Your guitar strings are very important to the quality of sound your guitar produces. How often you change your guitar strings really depends on how often you play. Professional guitar players may change their strings before every gig. Others who don't play as often, may change their strings every 2 months or so. Again it really depends on how often you play, and how well you take care of your guitar strings. Don't wait until your strings break before you change them and you should change all of your strings at the same time.

Try new things/experiment - If you feel uninspired in your guitar playing why not try something fresh and different? If you have mastered a particular song on your electric guitar, why not try the same song on an acoustic guitar? If you only play your guitar using a pick, put down the pick and just use your fingers. Perhaps you only enjoy playing blues guitar. Why not try some jazz or classical?

I hope these guitar tips were helpful. The most important thing is to never get discouraged and never give up. Persistence is key when it comes to playing the guitar. If you really have a sincere desire to learn, and you continue to practice, you will become a better guitar player.

Learning to Strum the Guitar

Learning how to play the guitar takes time even if it does not guarantee that the person will become a rock star. One can still do it by practicing often then harnessing his skill.

There are two ways for z person to start strumming the guitar. The first is doing it with the fingers and the other is doing it with a pick.

Practice starts by finding a place where you won't be disturbed. Positioning does matter a lot so it's best to put the guitar over the right knee (for a right handed person and vise versa if left handed) in order to play well.

There are some rules that you must remember when strumming. Of the 5 fingers, only 4 are used. The thumb touches and from to time adjusts to the three brass strings. The index, middle and ring fingers will handle the three treble strings. The pinkie is not used since it is the shortest finger and is not conducive to playing the guitar.

The guitarist can start by putting the right hand over the body of the guitar. The thumb should then touch the lowest string which is the low E.

At the same time, the left hand should touch the easy G chord and the index finger can go to the third fret at the top which is known as the high E string.

The right thumb will then stroke the 4th string then adjustments of the fingers can be made to hear it at different sounds and intervals.

If the person feels uncomfortable letting the fingers do the work, then he should start by using a flat pick. Some people have said that this is the easiest way to learn since a guitar has steel strings. By holding the pick with the thumb and ring finger then practicing it at different intervals, in time you will get the feel of playing the guitar.

Strumming is the best way to learn how to play a guitar. This can be done by buying a song book and reading the chords or learning them from friends.

When you are ready to move from drills to a playing a song, it is suggested that you have the music playing in the background.

Strumming is not only for beginners as some of the most skilled guitarists do this to warm up before practice or a gig. Everyone has to start somewhere and it starts by knowing the basics.

The acoustic guitars usually have a hollow body, while electric guitars have solid or semi-solid bodies. Acoustic guitars have hollow bodies because they rely on the body structure for sound resonation and electric guitars use electronic pick-ups to amplify the sound.

-Headstock

The headstock is the part at the end of the guitar which holds the tuning keys. It is connected to the neck of the guitar.

-Nut

The nut is the piece between the guitar neck and the head. It is a small rod with indentations to hold the guitar strings in place.

-Neck

The neck is the long section which holds the fret board.

-Fret board

The fret board is divided into different notes by small metal rods. The number of frets in a fret board varies depending on the type of guitar and the brand. Modern electric guitars usually have 20-22 frets in the fret board.

-Bridge

It is a part of the guitar's body and it is important for sound resonance. It gives elevation to the guitar strings so they can produce vibrations.

-Pick-up

The pick-up is an electronic device which acts like a microphone: it picks up the vibrations from the strings and converts the vibrations into electrical impulses. They are usually found in electric guitars

-Amp

The amplifier a speaker box from which the sounds of the electric guitar are magnified.

-Capo

This is a device which is attached to the fret board which allows a player to play the same chord structures but in a different key.

Listed below are some of the different words that you might encounter in learning how to play the guitar.

-Riff

Guitar riffs pertain to musical pieces which are parts of a song.

-Reverb

It is added to the sound of the guitar through an effects box or through amplifiers to make the sounds more natural.

-Tablature

Guitar tablatures or more commonly known as guitar tabs are written music for guitars. It is similar to musical pieces (with notes and other musical symbols) but the notes are translated into guitar frets. It's a useful tool in learning how to play the guitar.

-Vibrato

It refers to a guitar technique where the string is slightly bent at a fast rate to Produce a longer resonating sound.

-Arpeggio

This refers to a technique where you remove notes from a specific chord. You can then use these to create an adlib lead technique or add to the rhythm of the song.

-Pick

This is the small device which guitar players use to strike the guitar strings and is usually made of plastic.

-Whammy bar

This is an attachment to the bridge of electric guitars that can be used to bend the pitch of the notes. You can pull the whammy bar to be able to make your guitar "cry."

-Plucking

It's a picking technique where a player does not strum the strings all at once but hits the strings one by one to attain a softer and more defined tone.

-Palm mute

This is a technique where a player uses his picking hand (usually the right hand) to mute the strings while strumming to be able to attain a distinct tone. It is very popular in the punk rock world.

Learning The Guitar - Traditional Methods Vs Learning Online

What I'd like to discuss today, is whether or not is it, a) viable, and b) better, to learn how to play the guitar by methods of learning online.

Obviously learning online has it's huge benefits (less cost, learn when you want etc.), but the real question is, will it give you as good, or better of a result then learning through traditional methods?

Hopefully today I can answer that question.

Learning The Guitar The Traditional Way

So, you've made the decision to learn the guitar, whether that be because you want to be in a band and rock in front of thousands of fans, or whether it is just a hobby and you would like to improve your skills... either way, you'll need to find someone to teach you.

Traditionally, you would go to a music teacher who would impart their knowledge onto you, and teach you all the guitar secrets that they know, and bring you up to speed. Now, to me, there are some blaring problems with doing this.

Problem #1 - High cost... if you have to pay someone to teach you how to play the guitar, chances are it is going to cost you an arm and a leg over the period of time that you are getting taught... which could be anywhere from 3 months to years. And at $50 a lesson, it isn't cheap.

Problem #2 - Limited knowledge... now, yes you might be learning from a teacher, but chances are they also teach the piano, the flute, the trumpet and so on... what does this mean? It means they don't have specialized knowledge, which means they won't be as good as someone who just plays the guitar 8 hours a day.

Problem #3 - Learning speed... you are limited by the number of classes that you attend, but you are also limited to the program that your teacher assigns to you. They will have a set program for their students that they take them through, and usually not deviating from this program. This means that your learning progress could be seriously slowed.

Now, with those problems in mind, lets take a look at the other road, which is to find a program yourself (typically online) and learning from that.

Learning The Guitar Through An Online Learning Program

These programs are usually written by professionals. They could be written by ex-lead guitarists of some seriously high class bands, or teachers that have made a name for themselves in the industry, and are now trying to release a program to reach a wider audience via the internet.

Let's look at the problems of going this road.

Problem #1 - Requires self motivation... by effectively taking on a 'home study course' in how to learn the guitar; it requires that you are a self starter. Why? Because the person who is going to push you to learn, is going to be yourself. You don't have a teacher you can go to who is going to kick your butt if you have been slacking off, you have to do it yourself. Not everybody can do this, so if you're not the kind of person who is a self starter, don't even bother with this kind of course.

Problem #2 - Picking the right course... there are many courses out there to learn the guitar, so it can be hard trying to find which ones are good, and which ones are a waste of time. The way you get around this, is to do your own research, check out review sites, find out about testimonials and customer reviews. Find out what consumers think that have already bought the program.

So there you have it.

It really comes down to this fact, if you're a self starter, then you'll love getting an online learning program. The pace at which you will learn will be drastically increased, since you'll be able to go at your own pace (be that fast or slow).

If you're not really a self starter, but want to learn, then chances are that you should go find a decent teacher that will keep you in line.

All I will say is this, do your research on the teacher as well... have they produced any 'stars'? Have they been a successful guitarist themselves in their career? Or are they just teaching as a 'job'?

Learn To Play Guitar Chords: Learn To Play Turnarounds On Your Guitar

Turnarounds are chord progressions with the last chord taking you back to the first chord thus making it possible to play these progressions over and over again as an intro to a song, an ending or between verses. Here are some nice sounding but easy turnarounds for you!

In order not to mess up the layout with the guitar tab staff I will not include left hand fingerings but I suggest that you choose left hand fingers carefully so you don't get into trouble!

However, in order to learn to play these guitar chord progressions as intended I will say something about your right hand fingerings.

When you play these progressions on your guitar I suggest that you play the bass notes with your thumb and the first three guitar strings with you first finger, middle finger and ring finger.

Of course you can use a pick if you hate picking with you right hand fingers. If you strum the chords you will have to mute unused strings with your left hand fingers or otherwise you can pluck the strings with your pick using different patterns.

The first chord progression includes the guitar chords A F#m7 Bm11 and E7. You can use any right hand pattern you like as you play the chords.

1. ---0---0---0---0--- 2. ---2---2---3---3--- 3. ---2---2---2---1--- 4. ------------------- 5. ---0-------2------- 6. -------2-------0---

Our second turnaround consists of the guitar chords Amaj7, F#7, Bm11 and E7. When you learn to play these turnarounds I strongly suggest that you follow my advice above about left hand fingerings.

When you have found the most effective fingerings for the guitar chords it is important that you stick to the fingerings so that you can learn the progressions by heart and be able to move between chords fluently.

1. ---0---0---0---0--- 2. ---2---2---3---3--- 3. ---1---3---2---1--- 4. ------------------- 5. ---0-------2------- 6. -------2-------0---

Turnaround number three is a bit harder to play, at least the last chord which requires a bit of stretching. The chords are A, F#7+, Bm11 and Bb7add+11.

Try to move your fingers as little as possible when changing chords. To keep the fingers close to the fretboard will help you change chords smoothly. Here is the guitar tab:

1. ---0---0---0---0--- 2. ---2---3---3---3--- 3. ---2---3---2---1--- 4. ------------------- 5. ---0-------2---1--- 6. -------2-----------

The last guitar tab turnaround consists of the chords Aadd9, C9, Fmaj and Bb9+11.

The most difficult and most important thing when playing chord progressions on your guitar isn't to hold a chord but to change between chords.

To practice really effectively you can choose two consecutive chords and practice changing between them in a slow tempo.

1. ---0---0---0---0--- 2. ---2---3---1---1--- 3. ---4---3---2---1--- 4. -----------3------- 5. ---0---3-------1--- 6. -------------------

Now you can play four guitar progressions that of course can be mixed. You can replace the second chord in a progression with a second chord from another progression and so on.

I will end this learn to play guitar article by showing you a right hand pattern you can use with the chords. Use the pattern once for every chord in the progression. The thumb will of course be on different bass strings depending on the chord.

There are many common turnarounds that are used frequently in pop songs like the old pop song Diana, Last Christmas and many more. To practice the common progression C, Am, Dm, G7 in different keys is a good way to learn how chords are related and also a good way to practice the art of changing between chords in a smooth way.

Learning Guitar The Smart Way

If you want to do anything in life, the best way to do it is to find someone who has already done it before you, then model off of them.

Doing this increases your chances of success exponentially, and especially so when it comes to learning the guitar.

You see, if you go down the traditional road, of finding a guitar class or teacher, chances are your learning speed will be slowed dramatically...

Why you ask?

Because you can only learn at the speed at which they can teach, and often they aren't as good as you think that they are.

You also have to ask yourself, why are they teaching you? Is it because they just enjoy teaching you how to play the guitar? Or more realistically it is because they are running a business and need to earn a living. But what does this mean to you?

It means they have a set program that they run their 'students' through that takes them from A to Z, and they've set it at that pace, so that they can extract the maximum return from you, from a monetary point of view.

Now, this might sound a little cynical, and sorry it if is, but GENERALLY, that is the truth, that is how the world works.

You CAN find those rare gems of the human race that will teach you, and do it purely because they love what they do, they either have a lot of money themselves, or don't need the money for whatever reason.

If you can find someone like this, learn from them, because they will teach you everything that they know, at YOUR pace, not theirs... because they don't have a hidden agenda.

This is rare to find these kinds of people, sometimes you can find someone who is retired, and is looking for a 'prot?g?', who is willing to put the time and effort if they believe in you. And if you manage to find yourself someone like this, then you better do what they say, when they say it.

You have been given an incredible opportunity.

Now, with the advent of the internet, information is king. And with that, there are lead guitarists from around the world, releasing their programs on how to play the guitar just like them.

Some of these programs really are a joke, but there are some that are absolutely incredible.

They can take you from amateur guitarist, to full on pro in an extremely short period of time. And the best part, is that you can go at your own pace, you are not limited by someone who doesn't know how to teach you faster.

Bottom line, the courses that these high profile guitarists are releasing is probably going to be your best bet for modeling off excellence. It gets you access to their information, while still maintaining your independence, and self learning speed.

Learn To Play Guitar: A Little Touch Of Guitar Improvisation

I would like to present a few small tips on how to improvise on your guitar with a pentatonic scale in A-minor. We will use two chords and make the whole thing quite impressive. Grab your guitar and come on!

Guitar improvisation is not a completely uncomprehensible art that cannot be learned. You can practice the art of improvisation by learning scales, learning patterns to use in improvisation, by composing melodies on your guitar and by simply improvising a lot.

When you learn to play guitar I think it's a good thing to use time to experiment with chords and scales. This will help you develop your creativity and your own style of playing.

The following exercises will show you a way to practice scales and chords together.

First I would like to give you two chords you can use. The first chord is A7 and you can play it in the open position like this:

1. --0--- 2. --2--- 3. --0--- 4. --2--- 5. --0--- 6. ------

Now we will look at a small lick in the fift position on the guitar. This mean that you place your left hand on the neck with the first finger on the fifth fret. Here is the lick:

1. --5--8--5-----5-- 2. -----------8-----

I suggest that you first play the A7 chord on your guitar by strumming once over the strings and after that playing the lick.

Now we will add the D7 chord. It looks like this in the open position:

1. --2--- 2. --1--- 3. --2--- 4. --0--- 5. ------ 6. ------

With two guitar chords at your disposal you can play this:

A7 - lick - D7 - lick - A7

You will now learn another lick to make this piece of guitar improvisational music more interesting:

1. --------5--8--5-- 2. --5--8-----------

With this lick we have introduced one more note in the A-minor pentatonic scale. With two licks and two chords we can play the guitar piece as follows:

A7 - lick 1 - D7 - lick 2 - A7

Of course you can learn to combine the notes in many ways. I will give you some more notes in the A-minor pentatonic scale if you want to improvise more freely. Here are seven notes in the A-minor pentatonic scale in the fifth position:

1. -----------------5--8---- 2. -----------5--8---------- 3. -----5--7---------------- 4. --7----------------------

Learn to play this guitar scale by heart. After that you can try to combine the notes in different ways. Create patterns or play the scale backwards or try to create interesting melodies. The last touch of guitar improvisation looks like this:

A7 - improvisation - D7 - improvisation - A7

You can of course use this guitar improvisation pattern with other chords and scales. The principle is to choose two chords that can be used with the same scale and improvise between them.

Guitar: Can You Learn To Play Guitar Without Goals?

In many articles on the net on learning to play guitar you will find many article authors stressing the importance of setting goals. Well, it would be interesting to find out if you can learn to play guitar without goals. Let us investigate the matter!

I have many memories of my first attemps to play the guitar. Like many boys I had many interests like reading, playing piano, singing, listening to music, athletics, chess, stamp collecting, painting and other things at different times. Playing guitar was just one of them.

I remember that I had my own way of practicing guitar playing. I always had my guitar on my bed waiting for me. I sat down on my bed many times everyday playing for a while and then starting to do other things.

Sometimes I felt inspired to play guitar for an hour or two and other times just for a minute. Did I have goals or not?

I know that I was developing as a guitarist quite fast and I think it must have been something in my way of playing and practicing guitar that was good.

I believe that some of the reasons for my progress during those early days of my learn to play guitar career were:

1. I felt no pressure to become an accomplished guitarist. I just felt the joy of sitting down with my guitar trying to find out the treasuries in the land of music.

2. My father was a guitar teacher giving me lessons at times and I always heard him play guitar in our home. Other guitarists visited our home many times and these visits inspired me a lot.

3. I never felt a pressure to play fast and thereby building tensions by playing too fast. This is one of the big mistakes beginning guitarist and even accomplished guitarists sometimes make.

4. As I mentioned previously I did a lot of other things besides playing guitar and I guess all these things I was involved in kept my mind quite healthy and helped me retain my joy when I learned to play guitar.

I guess in a sense I had goals that was not so apparent to me that directed me towards somewhere even if I was quite content being on the road of progress towards guitar land.

Can you learn something from my early guitar experiences? At least you can learn the following:

1. When learning to play guitar always remember to enjoy the act of playing without thinking too much on what you can or cannot do as a guitarist.

2. Try to associate with good musicians and guitarists that inspire you to play musically and that give you the motivation to learn to play new things on your guitar.

3. Beware of playing too fast on your guitar. There is a risk of building up muscle tensions and thereby actually reducing your ability to play fast. A remedy for this and a way to tame yourself is to use a metronome at a low tempo to reduce your speed to a level where you can play your guitar in a relaxed manner.

4. To become an interesting guitarist and musician you might benefit from being involved in other activities like listening to good music, having another hobby, reading good books, assiciate with other people and more.

Do you have to have goals to become a good guitarist? Well, even if you don't have learn to play guitar goals in the ordinary sense you can help yourself to play everyday by having easy access to your guitar.

Flamenco Guitar: Learn To Play Malaguena With Guitar Tab

Flamenco guitar is an art that it is hard to master. But is it possible to play a flamenco guitar melody that is easy to learn for a beginner. Come and see!

Flamenco is a song, music and dance style which has its roots in Moorish and Jewish musical traditions.

Flamenco culture has become one of the icons of Spanish music and even Spanish culture in general.

The flamenco guitar comes from the lute and is made of Spanish cypress and spruce and is smaller than a classical guitar with a sharper sound.

Malaguena is a flamenco style with its roots in the local fandango of Malaga.

You will not need to read sheet music to play this flamenco guitar piece. We will instead use guitar tablature. You will only use four strings on the guitar.

The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab with four strings indicated:

1. ------------------------- 2. ---------0-----------0--- 3. -----1-----------1------- 4. -2-----------2-----------

This is a tablature staff and the number 2 on the fourth string indicate that you play the fourth string while pressing down the second fret.

The next note is played on the first fret on the third string. The zero indicate that you play the note without pressing down any fret.

Play the melody with your thumb and with your first finger resting on the first string for later use.

Here is the next guitar tablature part:

1. ------------------------- 2. -----1---0--------------- 3. -2-----------2---0------- 4. ---------------------3---

After the last note on the third fret on the fourth string you just start over again with the first guitar tab staff.

Now it is time to introduce your first finger on your right hand into the melody. After every note you play with your thumb you just have to pluck the first string with your first finger. In guitar tab it looks like this:

1. -----0-------0------ 2. -----------------0-- 3. ---------1---------- 4. -2------------------

And so on for the rest of the melody!

I hope you will find this very simplified flamenco guitar tab melody enjoyable. I guess many people will recognize the melody when they hear you play it.

Learn to Play Guitar - Pinch Harmonics and Making Your Guitar Scream

In this article I'll explain how to make your guitar squeal with Pinch Harmonics.
A lot of guitarists have trouble learning how to do these, but it's really a simple technique.

I'm going to touch on all types of harmonics in an effort to explain how Pinch Harmonics work when your playing the guitar.

If your like me you like to add a little expression when playing your guitar, by adding some harmonics and pinch harmonics.

To get this started we're going to go into a little detail about how the guitar strings actually work. Now I'm not going to be all technical, as that's not who I am :o)
Basically the guitar string vibrates between the nut and the bridge. If you look closely you can see the string vibrating like a sine wave.

Natural harmonics happen at the spaces along the string where the "wave" stops and starts a new one. (Not technically correct but makes sense to me this way).
This normally happens just above the 5th fret, the 7th fret, and the 12th fret wires. If you take a minute in a well lit room you can see the spots where the vibration along the string actually seems to be stopped. When you lightly touch a ringing string on these points you will get a natural harmonic chime.

Tap harmonics are simply fretting a string and moving the natural harmonic spot up accordingly. For example: If you fret the Low E String at the 3rd fret and pluck the string, your "natural harmonics" would no longer be at the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets. You would Tap the string above the 8th, 10th, and 15th fret wire to sound the harmonic. Hence the name....Tap Harmonic.

Now..to the meat of this...the all powerful Pinch Harmonic!! I say all powerful just because I love the extra expression and sound you can get from them.

To do a Pinch Harmonic you basically "Pinch" the string between your Pick and the side of your thumb that's holding the pick.
This is the way I do them and have had excellent luck with this technique.

When you strike the string you let your thumb sound the harmonic you want. It takes a bit of trial and error to find the right areas above the pickups that sound the harmonics you want, but only a little.
The best way to learn the placement is to crank up your distortion (easier to sound them), and on put your fret hand on the Low E or A String on the 5th or 7th fret as if you were playing A note or D note.
Start with your pick in about the middle of the Neck and Bridge pickups and "Pinch" the string so that when your pick sounds it your thumb immediately touches the string. This should sound a Pinch Harmonic. The motion is similar to turning the ignition in a car, just not as drastic...it's a slight "Turn" or "Pinch" on the string.

You may have to move your hand slightly higher or lower on the string to find the "sweet spots". Keep trying different areas until you get it just right.

Once you've found the spots that give the sounds you want, make a mental note of where they are. When you move your fret hand higher or lower on the neck...the places you can hit the harmonics will move slightly. This falls in line with the way a Tap Harmonic works, so keep that in mind.

Keep practicing finding the "Sweet Spot" until you can do it each time you try. This part does take a little time and practice.

Just as a note: When you change to a different guitar, be prepared to relearn where the Pinch Harmonics sound. Every guitar I've played on has them in slightly different places. Differences in neck length, bridge placement, manufacturing tolerances all come into play.

So, that's all there is to it...Keep practicing till you get the feel for it, try adding bends and sound another one, you'll make that guitar scream like a wounded banshee in no time.

If you want to really increase your skill with Pinch harmonics after you get the feel for them, try practicing them with a clean sound. They can still be sounded and your accuracy will increase exponentially!!

There are many ways to notate music on the guitar. You can use sheet music easy to understand when you have learned to read sheet music. To learn to read sheet music on the guitar is however not so easy for many students.

What different ways are there to notate guitar melodies?

1. You can use guitar sheet music. The advantage is that it is universal, meaning that other instrumentalists will understand the notation.

2. You can use guitar tablature. A tablature staff consists of six lines representing the six strings on a guitar. Number on the lines indicate what fret to press down. Guitar tablature is very common on the net and is a widely used.

3. Use another system.

4. Describe with words how to play the melody on the guitar.

In this article I will use an easy system that doesn't need a staff and I will also describe how to play the melody on the guitar with words. We will learn to play the melody Happy Birthday To You.

How to read the guitar notation

The first number tells you what fret to press down. The second number what string to play on. An example:

1/2

This means, press down the first fret on the second string.

Let's play Happy Birthday To You. We can divide the song into four parts:

1. Start by playing the open third string twice. When you play a string without pressing down a fret is called to play an open string. Then you press down the second fret on the third string and the open third string. Play the first fret of the second string and the open second string. It will look like this:

0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 1/2 0/2

2. Play the open third string twice. Play the second fret on the third string and the open third string. Play the third fret of the second string and the first fret on the second string. It will look like this:

0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 3/2 1/2

3. Play the open third string twice. The third fret on the first string and the open first string. The first fret string two and open second string. Second fret on the third string. It will look like this:

0/3 0/3 3/1 0/1 1/2 0/2 2/3

4. We finish the song by playing the first fret first string twice. Open first string and first fret second string. Third fret second string and first fret second string.

1/1 1/1 0/1 1/2 3/2 1/2

I suppose you think that you learn guitar by playing guitar. Well, do you learn to say the right things by talking all the time? Let's take a look at the art of not playing guitar...

How can you learn to play guitar by not playing? Is it really possible to develop as a guitarist without touching the instrument?

In weight training it is an established fact that muscle growth takes place during rest, for example when you sleep. It doesn't mean that you will become a famous muscle builder by sleeping. Sleeping is just a part of the overall picture called muscle growth.

Don't ever think that you will become a good guitarist by not playing guitar at all!

But I define a good guitarist as a good musician. A good musician can convey his musical emotions to somebody else and this ability takes more than just practicing moving the fingers among all those guitar strings.

What can you do to become a better guitarist and a musician when you don't play? Let me give you a few suggestions:

1. If you play classical guitar, get into the habit of often reading guitar sheet music without your guitar. This practice gives you training in the art of hearing the sheet music in your head and also gives you a better chance to really learn notational symbols in the music and rhythmic subtleties.

2. Take a week off from your guitar playing every now and then and use all your musical energy listening to good music or just being a good citizen. Learn to spot musical and artistic heights in the music. Listen to all types of instrumentalists. With concentration. My best listening position is laying flat on my bed with headphones on forgetting the rest of the world. Maybe you have another approach.

If you feel and enjoy musical and artistic expressions in the music these will probably be implemented in your own guitar playing sooner or later.

3. Be a good musical friend by helping somebody else to play. It will help you become more unselfish and like people more. Well, maybe you already like people sufficiently but to learn to like people is part of our development as musicians as we are supposed to give of ourselves to others when we play.

4. Prepare your body and mind for playing guitar by learning the art of relaxation and stretching your muscles. You can of course find articles on these subjects on the net. Performing in a relaxed manner will help you enjoy your own music more and will help your public to relax and enjoy your music too.

5. Take time to sit down, or stand up if you like, and ponder about what guitar playing means to you. Is there something that you would like to develop in your guitar playing that will give you more joy and happiness. Set a realistic goal and write down what you can do every week to accomplish that goal.

I believe in practicing on my guitar of course but I hope that these pieces of advice concerning not playing guitar will increase your love for your guitar and the art of playing and giving musical joy to others!

Guitar Tablature: Learn To Play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star With Guitar Tab

Even if you haven't played guitar tablature before you can impress or maybe shock your friends by playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Let's start playing guitar tab!

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is a popular English nursery rhyme with the French melody Ah! Vous dirais-je, Maman. You can play this song on the first three strings on the guitar.

The text is from a poem, "The Star", by Jane Taylor. It was first published in 1806. Here you have the English lyrics:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are! Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are!

We will use guitar tablature so you will not need to read sheet music. You will only use the thinnest strings on the guitar. The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab:

1. 0-0-0-0----------------- 2. --------1-1-1-1--------- 3. ----------------2-2-2-2-

This is a tablature staff and the four number 0 indicate that you play the first string four times without pressing down any finger on your right hand. This is called to play on an open string.

The four number 1 coming after is played on the second string pressing down your first finger on the first fret. Then you will play the third string four times pressing down the string on the second fret. This is what the previous guitar tablature notation is telling you.

Let's play the first notes of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with guitar tablature:

1. ------------0--0-------------------------- 2. ------3--3-------3----1--1--0--0---------- 3. 0--0-----------------------------2--2--0--

If you want to use your left hand in a professional way you can play the guitar tab notes on the first fret with your first finger, notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the notes on the third fret with your ring finger.

Now it's only one guitar tablature part left:

1. 3--3--1--1--0--0----- 2. ------------------3-- 3. ---------------------

After having played this part twice, go back and play the first guitar tablature part and the melody is complete.

Now when you understand guitar tablature notation you can find many songs written this way on the internet. Search for guitar tab or guitar tablature. A complete guitar tablature staff has six lines representing the six strings.

If you have an ukulele hanging somewhere you can use the previous tablature too. The first three strings on an ukulele is tuned the same way as on the guitar.

Learn To Play Guitar: Why Is It So Hard For Guitarists To Read Sheet Music?

Is it hard for you to read guitar sheet music? Well, let's do something about it right now!

Anyway, why is it so hard for many guitarists to read sheet music on the guitar?

Probably it is a question easy to answer. They haven't done anything about it.

An old used tyre leaned against the wall of a car garage can stand there for thousands of years. Why? Nobody has thought about moving it. Could it be that easy also with playing guitar sheet music? I think so.

Sometimes we consider ourselves poor sight readers or not able to read guitar sheet music at all and we think this is part of our personality. Do you think so?

Every person who wants to learn to read guitar sheet music notation properly has already taken the first step towards changing that condition, just like you have done by reading this article.

Climbing the "Reading Guitar Sheet Music" mountain starts with step one. Surprised? Well, I have been teaching guitar playing for many years and I have found that learning to play guitar is like many other activities. People, not you of course, often want to start from another position than from where they are.

I would like to suggest that we approach the sight reading assignment from two directions. First by learning to find our way around the guitar and learning the notes on the fingerboard. Secondly by learning the names of the notes on the sheet music. May I suggest a string safari on your guitar? Doesn't the job seem more interesting now?

With the conventional tuning on your guitar you will have the note E on the first open string. I guess you are aware of the fact that you can find the same note on the second string too. If you don't know on what fret you will find it you can listen your way through the frets on the second string until you'll find the note that sounds the same as the first string.

Now I will be frank and tell you that E on the second string is on the fifth fret. Maybe you have already found that out. E on the third string is on the ninth fret. Practice to play E on these different places and jump back and forth until you can find the frets without effort.

You can proceed learning more of the guitar fretboard in a similar way.

You might want to invent small exercises on you guitar fretboard, like playing all E's on all six strings until you can play them with ease or finding all C's and play them consecutively like a picking exercise or as an exercise for your right hand fingers.

Knowing the notes on the guitar fingerboard will be a great help for you, not only when playing guitar sheet music but also when you are playing by ear or improvising a solo.

I guess you practice on your guitar in the hope of becoming a better guitarist with the joy that follows. However, many learning processes are active when you practice on your guitar.

After reading this article I hope you will be more aware of factors that can limit your progress as a guitarist and that your guitar practice sessions will be more effective.

At times when you practice on your guitar you might find that you are nervous and don't feel too good because you feel forced to play due to a guitar lesson coming up.

You feel that you haven't done your homework or maybe other negative feelings are present for some reason.

The feelings you have when you practice a certain piece of music have a tendency to be evoked anew when you play the piece at another occasion.

Can tensions stick to your sheet music? Yes, in a way at least.

My experience, also confirmed when reading about this topic, is that your actual tension level when playing a musical composition on your guitar also tends to be present when you play the same piece of music in public.

In short, it will be harder to perform a piece of music in a relaxed way when you have practiced it with too much tension.

Can you learn not to play a piece of music on your guitar?

Well, You practice on your guitar in order to become a better player and maybe to learn a piece of music that you like.

The fact is that if you don't concentrate on your guitar playing you can make a lot of mistakes when trying to learn a piece of music. These mistakes tend to slow down the learning process, or rather, they will be a part of the learning process.

The more times you make mistakes playing a particular passage on your guitar the harder it will be for you to play it right because of those earlier mistakes trying to get your attention!

Can the secret learning processes become your friends? Can you actually use these principles to your advantage? Yes and yes! In accordance with the before mentioned dangers when practicing you can:

Guitar is a musical instrument strung with gut strings having a body with a flat back, graceful incurvarions etc. and for playing, it is twanged by the fingers. It is called in French as guilarre, German as Guitarre, Italian as cijitarra and in Spanish as guitarra. The construction of the instrument is of paramount importance in assigning to the guitar its true position in the history of musical instruments, midway between the cithara and the violin.

Materials Used

The back and ribs of guitar are comprised of maple, ash or cherry-wood, frequently inlaid with rose-wood, mother of pearl, tortoise-shell etc. while the sound board is of pine and has one large ornamental rose sound hole. The bridge, to which the strings are fastened, is of ebony with an ivory nut which determines the one end of the vibrating strings, while the nut at the end of the fingerboard determines the other. The neck and fingerboard are made of hard wood, such as ebony, beech or pear. The head, bent back from the neck at an obtuse angle contains two parallel barrels or long holes through which the pegs or metal screws pass, three on each side of the head. Strings

The real Sound ridges called frets. The modern guitar has six strings, three of gut and three of silk covered with silver wire, tuned as, the thumb are assigned the three deepest strings while the first, second and third fingers are used to twang the highest strings. Open string preparation and striking

When striking or plucking a string the movement in thumb should come from above and through the string making sure that you have a good solid contact with the string and a clear follow through. Your finger again should come from above but they will pull backwards into the palm of your hand. A good contact is needed and again a clear follow through that does not collide with the other close fingers.

Stable right hand technique

Now try to rest the thumb on the D string when the fingers are playing and also rest each individual finger on its assigned treble string. This gives a solid stable right hand position that isn't floating in the air above the strings attempting to hit a moving target. Your fingers and thumb should rest on the string waiting to strike. Make the transition smooth, so when replacing the thumb back on the D string pluck with the index and begin the trebles.

Practice

Often players have a slight lift and shake in their right hand that often limits the volume and security of your stroke, if you repeat this exercise slowly and listening for a good sound you will relax the hand and get a very clear sound. This is a technique of preparation and economy of movement that will take some time to filter its way into your existing songs and chordal progressions. It also will build a new technique and way in which you approach the guitar.

1.Take your time, don't go for speed first, go for accuracy.

2.Go for a nice deep stroke and listen for a rounded tone.

3.Feel secure and balanced.

4.Remember you want a technique that is as simple and as stable as possible.

Try and go up and down the guitar nice and slowly try and keep your hand relaxed, this exercise will remind you of the feel of the strings and how to approach the guitar.

Using standard chords

With your left hand bring in the chords of Eminor, Cmajor, Gmajor and Dmajor. Hold the chord for at least two repetitions of the right hand pattern going up and down the guitar. These chords require 6 strings, 5 strings and 4 strings to be plucked if we want the root note of each chord in the bass. This gives your thumb a different starting point for each chord. Remember to pivot through the changes in the left hand, try and link each chord to the next one. No fret buzz or sloppy timing between the hands. Complete synchronicity and always enough pressure to sound the note without buzzing, careful that you don't put down to much pressure.

Repetition and speed of fingers

When playing music that is formed in single lines, e.g. a guitar solo, the melody of a tune a run or scale make sure that your fingers alternate when plucking or striking the notes. The simplest way to approach this is to alternate between Index & middle fingers. These fingers are set beside each other and are also strong fingers so they should quickly get used to this type of alternation. The alternation gives a sense of rhythm and groove and will enable you to play twice as fast than if you used just your index.

Careful to always alternate index to middle. When playing the repetition of 4 or 2 this is easier than 3 or 1, the odd numbers create almost a little skip as you cross the string, relax your hand and concentrate on shifting the weight from finger to finger. Careful that you don't bring your left hand to far from the fret board, keep it close in so each finger it can be quickly depressed onto the strings. Tip of the fingers in the left hand at all times.

Things to remember while playing Guitar

Sit with a forward sloping posture by tucking your feet underneath a horizontal chair, heels off the floor. The easiest way to have a forward sloping chair is to place a piece of wood under the back legs of your chair. Avoid backward sloping chairs.

If you don't like sitting with your legs tucked underneath, then just initially tuck your legs underneath until your upper torso swings forward like a pendulum. You spine will reach a more natural curve. Then bring your legs back to the untucked position by only moving your feet foreword; do not let your upper torso move back to a slumped position, although it may swing back a very small amount.

Sit with the entire body in a symmetrical position while still making minor movements and adjustments. Sitting well yet too rigidly makes for poor pressure distribution. Also, try wearing loose clothing as to allow for easier movement. Place your music stand at horizontal lane of your eyes at a convenient distance for your eyes.
