Are you having fun learning guitar? If there?s one thing I?ve discovered over the years as a teacher, it?s the importance of keeping things simple and fun for my students. This can sometimes require a bit of creative thinking on my part. But I find, if I pay attention to my students, I am often able to discover where their musical interests and desires lie. When I can key into these personal and motivational impulses, then I am able to direct that energy in a positive direction. The result is a happy student who is having fun learning guitar!

When a new student first arrives at my studio they are often filled with hopeful expectations. Many have visions of being able to play like one of their guitar heroes someday. This is all well and good as it establishes a goal. But it usually isn?t long before they realize that visions and reality can be worlds apart! Playing like a professional guitarist requires a bit of discipline and hard work, not to mention sore fingers! The trick to having fun learning guitar is to mix a little business with pleasure! To do this, I recommend that a student spend time practicing the fundamentals as well as learn something they want to play.

Often a student will mention to me that there is a song they?d like to learn. Even if I think that it?s beyond their current level and ability, I still do not want to discourage them from pursuing it. Instead, I try to break the song down into small, bite-size pieces, or perhaps pull out a particular technique for them to work on first. I have found this approach to be very effective because my guitar students are more inspired to practice when they are playing what they want to learn. Their skill level seems to improve more rapidly too, and they are enjoying themselves in the process. That?s what it?s all about in my book!

If a student doesn?t have a particular song in mind, then I will often suggest something for them to try. I find that simplified versions of classic rock riffs are great motivators- especially for kids. Some examples that I?ve used and had success with include Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple, and Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix. Another popular and easy rock riff is Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.

If you?re a guitar student who is not having fun learning guitar, then I suggest you find something you?d like to learn. It will make a big difference in how you look at practicing!

There is a really common mistake that many guitarists make when learning guitar scales. This one mistake slows down their rate of progress drastically. What do you think it is? It is simply this?

1. You?ll feel overwhelmed.

Just thinking that you have to learn hundreds of scales puts you in a total state of overwhelm. You might not even know which scales to start with. This feeling of overwhelm can often lead to procrastination. You keep putting off your guitar scale practice in favor of things that are more fun.

2. You?ll learn unnecessary scales.

Trying to learn every single scale there is can lead to you learning unnecessary scales. These are guitar scales that are not needed in order to play the style of music that you want to play. For example: If you have a love of blues guitar then it would be a complete waste of time to learn some exotic scales that you will never use. Your time would be better spent mastering the scales common to blues guitar.

3. Your guitar practice routine becomes unbalanced.

If you try to learn way too many scales at once then there is a good chance that you spend too much time practicing scales. This can cause you to neglect practicing other really important things such as phrasing, ear training, chords, improvisation and learning songs.

4. You learn scales in a superficial way.

This is when you know lots of guitar scales, but you don?t know any on a very deep level. They have not ?become part of you? yet. This probably means that you find it hard to improvise in a musical way. You may sound like you are just running up-and-down scales when you solo.

Flamenco Guitar: Learn To Play Malaguena With Guitar Tab

Flamenco guitar is an art that it is hard to master. But is it possible to play a flamenco guitar melody that is easy to learn for a beginner. Come and see!

Flamenco is a song, music and dance style which has its roots in Moorish and Jewish musical traditions.

Flamenco culture has become one of the icons of Spanish music and even Spanish culture in general.

The flamenco guitar comes from the lute and is made of Spanish cypress and spruce and is smaller than a classical guitar with a sharper sound.

Malaguena is a flamenco style with its roots in the local fandango of Malaga.

You will not need to read sheet music to play this flamenco guitar piece. We will instead use guitar tablature. You will only use four strings on the guitar.

The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab with four strings indicated:

This is a tablature staff and the number 2 on the fourth string indicate that you play the fourth string while pressing down the second fret.

The next note is played on the first fret on the third string. The zero indicate that you play the note without pressing down any fret.

Play the melody with your thumb and with your first finger resting on the first string for later use.

Here is the next guitar tablature part:

1. ------------------------- 2. -----1---0--------------- 3. -2-----------2---0------- 4. ---------------------3---

After the last note on the third fret on the fourth string you just start over again with the first guitar tab staff.

Now it is time to introduce your first finger on your right hand into the melody. After every note you play with your thumb you just have to pluck the first string with your first finger. In guitar tab it looks like this:

1. -----0-------0------ 2. -----------------0-- 3. ---------1---------- 4. -2------------------

And so on for the rest of the melody!
