I am interested learn about guitar and how to play guitars when saw my friend performing in the stage and it was in my secondary school. He is so cool and I think that it will attract a lot of girls. A person can learn how to play a guitar without a whole lot of extra stuff. There are gadgets and a lot of bells and whistles you can purchase if you choose but the only thing that is a must have is a guitar.

Even this does not have to be one of the expensive models. There has been a lot of great music played on not so great guitars over the years. The important thing is the guitar you choose be in decent shape. The first item you need to check is the action of your guitar. The action is a term that guitar players use to refer to how high the strings are.

The action on your guitar needs to be set at a reasonable level. This is most important because if the action is too high the guitar will be hard to play and if it is too low the strings will buzz. The guitar should note even all the way down the neck.

Another important thing to check is to make sure the intonation is ok. To check this play the smallest string open then play it again at the 12th fret. The notes should be in tune with each other. If there is a big difference in the notes the guitar has some possible major problems.

When you are picking out your first guitar it makes little difference in brand name or whether the guitar is a classical or steel string guitar. The notes are the same so get the best guitar you can afford without getting crazy.

Learning to play a guitar brings a new set of problems you have most likely not experienced before. You will find muscles cramping and sore fingers coming along after you have played for a little while. Learning guitar chords may seem daunting for a new guitar player. However, it doesn?t have to be that way. Remember, the guitar professionals were once novices who didn?t have a clue about chords as well! In this article, I will divulge some proven tips for learning chords quickly and easily.

Firstly, let?s define what a guitar chord is. A guitar chord is a collection of tones sounded in harmony by pulling two or more strings on a guitar. It usually requires playing open strings.

Now that we have got the definition out of the way, it is time to get straight down to the methods! Obviously, one of the main difficulties in playing chords is using a few fingers a tight space in an attempt to play a tune. Well, practice makes perfect. You can speed up the process of learning chords by referring to a guitar chord diagram. These diagrams show the organization of the guitar chords you should be playing.

The second tip is to find a song, preferably an easy song, which you like and to try to play the chords to it. Starting with an easy song helps build you competence in chord playing

My third tip is to simply choose a chord family and really practise it until you become really good at it! If you try to learn too many chord families in a short space of time, you may end up with information overload, and you will not be able to learn as quickly. Learn To Play Guitar Tab - Auld Lang Syne

Today you will learn to play a popular melody with guitar tab. You do not need to know sheet music notation. Let me show you guitar tablature!

Here are the lyrics of the first verse and chorus:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and auld lang syne ?

For auld lang syne, my dear

for auld lang syne

we?ll take a cup o? kindness yet

for auld lang syne

Below you have an example of a guitar tab staff. The lines represent the three first strings on your guitar, that is, the strings with the highest pitch.

The line number one represent the first string.

1. ----------------------

2. ----------------------

3. ----------------------

On this guitar tab staff you will find numbers showing which frets you need to press down to play the melody.

Now you will start to read the guitar tab for the first part of the lyrics:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

1. -------------------------0------------------------

2. -------1----0----1------------3-----1-----3---

3. --0-----------------------------------------------

The number 0 on the third string tells you to play this string without pressing down a fret. In other words you will play the open third string.

The next note is on the first fret on the second string. Press down the first fret and play the note.

I suggest that you pluck the notes with your right hand thumb.

Time for the next line of lyrics and guitar tab:

The first two notes in the tablature will be used for the word "and" in the lyrics.

What about the left hand fingers? You can use your index finger to press down all frets as you play.

This is a very common way to play guitar for beginners.

In the long run a better way to use your left hand fingers is to play all notes on the first fret with your index, the notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the third fret notes with your ring finger.

In the special case above with the fifth fret I suggest that you slide your ring finger from fret three to fret five.

Yes, it is true that it is a bit awkward to use the ring finger but believe me it will soon get used to the new tasks and be of great benefit in your guitar playing!

The Number One Mistake Guitarists Make When Learning Guitar Scales

There is a really common mistake that many guitarists make when learning guitar scales. This one mistake slows down their rate of progress drastically. What do you think it is? It is simply this?

They try to learn every single scale there is!

I did this myself when I first started playing guitar. I bought one of those thick guitar scale books and set about trying to learn them all. I was spending hours and hours a day learning the scales in the book. I thought that to be a ?master of scales? I had to know them all! I soon realized that I was making a big mistake?

Now why on earth would this be a mistake? Surely the more guitar scales you know the better right? Well?if you had seventeen lifetimes to learn them all, then this would be true. But the fact is, our time on this planet is limited. There is just not enough time to learn every possible scale!

So why does trying to learn huge numbers of guitar scales potentially slow down your progress? Here are four big reasons?

1. You?ll feel overwhelmed.

Just thinking that you have to learn hundreds of scales puts you in a total state of overwhelm. You might not even know which scales to start with. This feeling of overwhelm can often lead to procrastination. You keep putting off your guitar scale practice in favor of things that are more fun.

2. You?ll learn unnecessary scales.

Trying to learn every single scale there is can lead to you learning unnecessary scales. These are guitar scales that are not needed in order to play the style of music that you want to play. For example: If you have a love of blues guitar then it would be a complete waste of time to learn some exotic scales that you will never use. Your time would be better spent mastering the scales common to blues guitar.

3. Your guitar practice routine becomes unbalanced.

If you try to learn way too many scales at once then there is a good chance that you spend too much time practicing scales. This can cause you to neglect practicing other really important things such as phrasing, ear training, chords, improvisation and learning songs.

4. You learn scales in a superficial way.

This is when you know lots of guitar scales, but you don?t know any on a very deep level. They have not ?become part of you? yet. This probably means that you find it hard to improvise in a musical way. You may sound like you are just running up-and-down scales when you solo.

I never cease to be amazed at the number of guitar players who cannot name the notes on their fretboard. Little do they know that by devoting a little time to unlocking the neck of their guitar they will improve their playing, and enjoyment of the instrument, ten fold!!

During my time at the Guitar Institute in London, and Sandown College Of Performing Arts in Liverpool, I met many guitarists who had been playing for 10, 15 or even 20 years, and yet, unbelievably, couldn't show me where to find an A# on the 2nd string or a B natural on the 5th string. My amazement prompted me to write the "Fretboard Master" ebook.

The "Fretboard Master" ebook contains all you need to know in order to become a master of the fretboard. What do we mean when we say master of the fretboard? Well, it doesn't mean that you will suddenly start sounding like Steve Vai, Segovia or Jimi Hendrix! A fretboard master is somebody who feels comfortable with their guitar, Somebody that can find any note on any string within a second and somebody that can transpose a piece of music on the spot. That is a fretboard master.

Many guitar players are usually only interested in learning hot licks or funky chords. That is good, as long as they also take time out to study the layout of the fretboard. The old saying "The proof is in the pudding," is so true when it comes to stating the importance of fretboard mastery. Once you start familiarising yourself with the notes on the neck of the guitar you will quickly discover how important it is. It will be like somebody has switched on a big musical light that shows you exactly what you have been missing. You will feel like a better player, look like a better player, inevitably sound like a better player and more importantly.....WILL BE a better player!!

Imagine learning a really cool chord progression, a red hot lick or a head turning funky guitar riff. You have spent hours practising it and you are now ready to unleash it on your band members. You play it, and they are all amazed at your stunning technique. They shake your hand, ruffle your hair, maybe even give you a shoulder lift around the rehearsal room. You feel great! Then when the fuss dies down, the bass player asks "Can you play that again in F#?" What? F#? You begin to sweat, your palms itch, your head races. Where's F#? you ask yourself. Too late! The drummer drops you from the shoulder lift and you hit the earth with a bang!! Ouch!! You blew it! You should have learnt your fretboard.

Take a tip from me. Whether you are just starting out or have been playing for a number of years, you need to learn you fretboard. There's no way round it. Do it today and who knows, maybe the next time you learn a cool guitar lick your drummer want drop you on the floor!

When you learn to read guitar sheet music it will be vital in expanding your guitar playing skills. Playing by ear will only get you so far and I am here to help take it to the next step. I will show you some basic tips and tricks to help you learn to read guitar sheet music and hopefully that will make you a better and more versatile guitar player.

I will now give you a list that will show you it is not hard to learn to read guitar sheet music.

Finding the right material

Most guitar books will have some basic sheet music and songs in the front pages that are designed to help you learn to read guitar sheet music quickly. Once you have basic guitar knowledge it is relatively easy to learn to read guitar sheet music. Start in small sections, one chord at a time. Use your guitar and play the chord out loud until you know it sounds correct. Setting your self up

You will need to be in a small quite room where you will not be distracted by anything when you learn to read guitar sheet music. The only way to know when you get it right is if it sounds right and it can be difficult do that if you have screaming kids in the room with you or loud street noise outside. Concentration is key and this will make it easier to learn how to read guitar sheet music. If you are distracted you may find a whole day can be wasted trying to focus.

Getting started

Remember what I said, be free from distraction! I cannot stress that enough. Now you're alone and it's quiet, find a music book with sheet music, try to pick something easy but also try to pick something you are familiar with. It makes it much easier to learn to read guitar sheet music if you are familiar with the tune. Make sure you are confident with one piece before you move on to the next.

Continue practicing

Continue to practice as much as you can, you will find that the better you get the more you will practice. When you enjoy something you will generally apply more time to it. Trying to learn to read guitar sheet music is easy as long as you practice! Once you have mastered reading sheet music then you can attempt to write you own music and that is where the real fun begins! It is essential to make sure you are confident or you will only have to go back and learn to read guitar sheet music all over again.

Guitar Tablature: Learn To Play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star With Guitar Tab

Even if you haven't played guitar tablature before you can impress or maybe shock your friends by playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Let's start playing guitar tab!

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is a popular English nursery rhyme with the French melody Ah! Vous dirais-je, Maman. You can play this song on the first three strings on the guitar.

The text is from a poem, "The Star", by Jane Taylor. It was first published in 1806. Here you have the English lyrics:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are! Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are!

We will use guitar tablature so you will not need to read sheet music. You will only use the thinnest strings on the guitar. The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab:

1. 0-0-0-0----------------- 2. --------1-1-1-1--------- 3. ----------------2-2-2-2-

This is a tablature staff and the four number 0 indicate that you play the first string four times without pressing down any finger on your right hand. This is called to play on an open string.

The four number 1 coming after is played on the second string pressing down your first finger on the first fret. Then you will play the third string four times pressing down the string on the second fret. This is what the previous guitar tablature notation is telling you.

Let's play the first notes of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with guitar tablature:

1. ------------0--0-------------------------- 2. ------3--3-------3----1--1--0--0---------- 3. 0--0-----------------------------2--2--0--

If you want to use your left hand in a professional way you can play the guitar tab notes on the first fret with your first finger, notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the notes on the third fret with your ring finger.

Now it's only one guitar tablature part left:

1. 3--3--1--1--0--0----- 2. ------------------3-- 3. ---------------------

After having played this part twice, go back and play the first guitar tablature part and the melody is complete.

Now when you understand guitar tablature notation you can find many songs written this way on the internet. Search for guitar tab or guitar tablature. A complete guitar tablature staff has six lines representing the six strings.

If you have an ukulele hanging somewhere you can use the previous tablature too. The first three strings on an ukulele is tuned the same way as on the guitar.
