Learning the guitar (or any other musical instrument) is a highly interactive task. You would normally be taught step-by-step how to tune your guitar, the basic chords and strumming rhythms and your teach would be able to correct you and show you how its supposed to be done.

But due to modern day technology, learning to play the guitar online is becoming more and more popular. In this article I'll discuss the pros and cons and if this method is indeed effective.

Pros

1. You can do it at your own pace and leisure.
   Most of us with fulltime jobs and families (but aspires to be a Guitar Hero) have only the late hours to learn and practice. An online course works great as you can login anytime and start the next lesson.
2. Its much cheaper
   As opposed to paying a tutor per lesson, an online guitar course can cost as little as $40 for an entire course with ear-training software to boot!
3. A good course is just like having a real teacher
   I found a wonderful guitar learning method that had well produced, high quality videos that showed me exactly how each chord should be played, and I can replay it as many times as I like without irritating a real-life teacher!

Cons

   Yes, you read correctly. The same freedom can also work against you as you will not be motivated to practice. Make sure you set goals and motivate yourself constantly.
2. Your PC might be slow or distorted.
   Make sure your PC is all tuned up and your sound card and speakers are all working fine before you attempt an online guitar course.
3. Lack of personal guidance
   Sometimes you'll want to ask something and an online course will not have a one-to-one consultation. This can be overcome by making friends with other guitarists and getting together once a week to share and play together.

The verdict? It depends on your level of commitment to your craft, the more you put in, the more you'll get out of it. Guitar playing needs time and practice and there's no simpler way out, although a solid and complete online guitar learning method will help a lot! I've read of some success stories from online courses and like I said, it depends on your perseverence and determination.

A guitar is an amazing instrument. Sometimes hard to play but with easy nice sounding guitar chord secrets everywhere. Let's explore some easy but nice guitar chords.

Our first guitar chord will be Dmaj7. It is played in this way for example:

Dmaj: 0/4 2/3 2/2 2/1

An explanation of the notation. The first number indicates which fret to press down. The number after the slash which string. 2/3 means, press down the second fret on the third string.

If you lift up your fingers from this chord you will get a very easy guitar chord to play indeed! We can call it an Em7. It will look this way:

Em7: 0/4 0/3 0/2 0/1

This little chord progression makes a nice little intro to a song in D-major. If we write down a little guitar chord sequense it might look like this:

Dmaj7 / / / Em7 / / / Dmaj7 / / / Em7 / / /

We will now spice the second chord a bit by playing a Gm6. It looks like this:

Gm6: 0/4 3/3 3/2 0/1

We can use this guitar chord in an intro with the same function as the one above:

The next guitar chord is easy to play too. It is a G-minor chord. It is actually the same chord shape as the guitar chord Dmaj7 but on the third fret. It looks like this:

Now we will create a guitar chord progression with these four chords together:

The art of sliding chords to new frets is an exciting and easy way to find new guitar chords and sounds to use in your playing.

Like for many who aspire to learn to play the guitar, my quest at proficiency has taken many twists and turns. I have considered taking formal classes at $30 an hour. While this method appears to be the best, it is expensive and requires a long commitment. In addition, due to my busy schedule I found it impossible to commit to a set schedule. I purchased the latest books, videos, and online software. By using each of these different delivery methods I learned a bit, and am able to play many basic tunes on the guitar. The purpose of this article is to share my thoughts on the benefits and drawbacks of each method mentioned above. These opinions are based on my experiences and frustrations in my journey to learn to play guitar. So lets get started!

My love affair with the guitar started about 12 to 15 years ago. I was listening to B.B King and was entranced by the sounds coming out of Lucille. I knew that I would love nothing more than to sit back at home and play those awesome songs all night! I thought it would be pretty cool to play some sick blues for a few of my friends at my very frequent (and often drunken!) parties. So I started to look for information on how to learn to play guitar. The Internet was not quite so replete with information as it is today (and I did not have a PC at my disposal) so I went to the bookstore and bought a few books. These books gave a pretty good basic history of the guitar and a cursory introduction into music theory. When it came to learning how to play, problems occurred from the start.

The first issue was tuning the guitar! The instructions were to use a piano for tuning. I did not have one and I suspect not many people do today. The tuning fork was a pain and I suspect that my first few months of learning were done with an out of tune guitar. The next issue was hand and finger position. Six lines, frets and black dots are a poor way to show you how to place your fingers. Even if you have no problem with this, the dynamic nature of playing guitar is difficult to illustrate on paper. The next issue was reading the music. It was presented in a cumbersome and very boring manner. How did I know that I was playing the notes right? The big issue with the book method for me was a lack of visual step-by-step instructions that showed me how the fingers worked in unison, and how the notes (and songs) were supposed to sound. In later years, books on how to learn to play guitar came with CDs. This was a tremendous improvement and help. Tuning was much easier, and I could listen to what the songs I was learning were supposed to sound like. But many of the problems remained. I feel that books are not the best delivery method for learning to play guitar.

Next came the videos. This media was leaps and bounds better than the books I had purchased. I could see and hear what the instructor was teaching. Tuning was even easier than before. Video close ups shed light on many of my previous questions on hand position and the dynamic nature of guitar playing. I was able to copy the instructor and actually play some cool tunes. I used the rewind function hundreds of times to reproduce something I had missed or was having troubles with. There were some very painful limitations to this method though. The first was boredom. You can only rewind the same tape to watch the same thing so many times. After that you lose interest. The next problem was that you really only learned to play whatever songs are on the 60 min tape. You were never (or at least not very well) given the tools to play other songs. This was quite limiting for me. The last issue was the actual camera angles of the videos. The shots were often too far or at wrong angles for you to see exactly what the instructor was doing. This was frustrating for me.

So we get to my favorite method: Online software! Today?s Internet gives us the ability to download full courses that allow you to learn to play guitar in the comfort of your home. Some of these courses are multimedia instructionals that allow you to use technology to maximum effect. One such course is Jamorama. This course teaches the user TAB, and how to play songs by ear. It takes advantage of the thousands of TAB songs available for free on the Internet. The price is close to what you would pay for one hour of instruction, or what you would pay for 2 good books on learning to play guitar. This course overcomes the shortcoming of books and videos because it is dynamic. There are games that teach you to learn the tedious and boring tasks of reading and transcribing music. There are over 148 videos that show you step-by-step how to play songs. One of the more interesting things about Jamorama is that it also has 26 tracks that you play along with. In fact, you can turn off the guitar track and play along with drummer and bassist. This is a vast improvement over the other methods. The main benefit with this method, and with this course in particular is that it is more interactive!

So what are the downfalls? Because these methods are made to appeal to a large audience with many different musical style interests, there are a lot of songs that just don?t appeal to me. I personally have no interest in Nirvana, Van Halen or a multitude of Bands/singers that always appear on these types of courses. Much of the content is just not interesting and therefore some of the wealth of information that is offered is often wasted. I still believe that online software is the best way to go to learn to play guitar. The interactive benefits are excellent. This is also a very convenient way to learn!

There are as many reasons why people want to play guitar as there are guitar players. The best way to learn guitar for everyone who wants to play, is going to be a course of study that targets each person's own musical aspirations.

The first step to learning how to play the guitar, is to decide what one wants to do or accomplish by learning how to play. Once a person knows what they want to accomplish by learning to play, then they can target the specific course of study to help them reach their personal musical goals.

To simplify things I will separate people who want to learn guitar into four groups, A through D. I will then offer suggestions for what approach each group should take to reach their personal goals.

Group A - Amateur. People in this group are those who want to play for fun and recreation. Included in this group are those who just want to strum chords and play songs.

Group A - Suggested course of study. First choose an acoustic guitar rather than an electric guitar. A beginner acoustic guitar that plays well and stays in tune can be purchased new for around $300. Only a basic knowledge of music theory is recquired to learn how to strum chords and play simple tunes. One year of lessons is plenty for those in group A. One year should be enough to learn how to string, tune, and play the common chords one needs to know to begin playing songs. On average, guitar lessons will cost about $15 for a thirty minute lesson.

It should be noted, that knowing a handful of the most common chords will allow one to learn thousands of songs. There is enough easy guitar music available to keep a person busy for a lifetime of learning simple tunes. If a person cannot afford lessons or a teacher is not available, then an online course is the next best thing. I still highly recommend that a new player should get at least a few lessons from a teacher to be sure they get pointed in the right drection. Most music stores offer lessons, some even offer a free lesson just for making a purchase. A live teacher is always better than a book or video because a teacher can be asked a question, and a teacher can also tailor a course of study that meets the needs of each individual.

Group B - Semi-professional. This group includes people who want to get to the semi-professional level. People in Group B are those who want to play electric and acoustic guitar. This group consist of those who want to play some lead guitar styles such as blues, pop, country, and rock. People in this group may want to perform solo or with a band to have some fun and maybe even make some extra money playing parties or clubs on the weekends.

Group B - Suggested course of sudy. People in this group should also choose an acoustic guitar to begin learning, however to play lead styles an electric guitar will probably be helpful once one has a basic grasp on making chords, strumming and picking. Those in this group only need a basic knowledge of music theory, however more emphasis should be placed on chord and scale theory than those in Group A. People in Group B should learn how to read guitar tablature. One year of lessons should be fine for this group, however some online courses will be very helpful in addition to the formal guitar lessons with a teacher.

Group C - Professional without a music degree. This group would include those who want to be professional guitar players. These people want to make a living playing guitar. Players in this group are those who are mostly self taught, have little or no formal training, play by ear, and read tablature but not music notes. Most of the people in this group want to perform and or record music as a solo artist or as a member of a band.

Group C - Suggested course of study. People in this group should also get one year of basic formal music study with a teacher. Because people in group C are not music readers, they will need to develop their "play by ear" capabilities to a very high level. Players in this group need to polish their playing. Polish comes from concentrated practice sessions for a minimum of two hours evey day. Many professional guitar players practice six hours a day or more.

Stage performance and business savvy are required skills at the professional level, and in many cases can be the difference between those who crack the big time and those who do not.

Group D - Professional Guitarist/Musician. People in this group want to become professional guitar players and musicians. This group would include those who want to play and perform complex forms of music such as classicl and jazz. People in this group may want to play in the symphony orchestra, become session musicians, or perform and record as a solo artist or as part of a band. People in Group D are those who want to pursue a classical musical education and gain a music degree. People in this group would have a thorough understanding of music theory and would be able to sight read traditional music notes flawlessly. People in this group will likely be proficient with a second instrument, most often piano.

Group D - Suggested course of study. Those who fall into this group need a solid foundation of music theory and composition, so traditional music study with a teacher is imperative. Those in this group need to be excellent music readers and the training should start at an early age, elementary school age or younger would be best. A working knowledge of piano is recommended for Group D, because most major music programs require piano as a primary or secondary instrument as a prerequisite for acceptance into the program.

Many musicians in this category continue concentrated areas of specialized study with master instructors after college. For people in this group the study of music and their instrument never really ends. It should go without saying that a major commitment is required for anyone looking to become part of this group.

1. Don't expect to be some kind of amazing guitar player overnight! It just doesn't happen that way. Like most things, learning guitar takes time and you must be patient. The more you practice the better.

2. Start off slow. Don't rush yourself, and don't drive yourself crazy if you don't get something right the first, second, or third time. It may take you a hundred times to get a riff right. The important thing is that you start off slow. Example: If you found a new riff, or chord progression that you like, start off practicing very slow. It may seem tedious, but it helps tremendously. Once you start adjusting to the riff, start increasing the speed.

3. Practice chord changes. One of the worst things to me is watching someone struggle to change between simple chords. Make sure to get these chord changes down. This will make everything so much easier in the long run.

4. One of my favorite things to do is to practice on an acoustic guitar. This strengthens your fingers greatly, and helps build speed.

5. Listen to lots of music. Any kind of music is ok. Then, just try and figure out whatever you're listening to on guitar. Even if you only get in a couple of notes or chords, thats ok. This technique will help with your musical ear. Then after enough practice you'll be able to pick up a song on the radio in no time.

In many articles on the net on learning to play guitar you will find many article authors stressing the importance of setting goals. Well, it would be interesting to find out if you can learn to play guitar without goals. Let us investigate the matter!

I have many memories of my first attemps to play the guitar. Like many boys I had many interests like reading, playing piano, singing, listening to music, athletics, chess, stamp collecting, painting and other things at different times. Playing guitar was just one of them.

I remember that I had my own way of practicing guitar playing. I always had my guitar on my bed waiting for me. I sat down on my bed many times everyday playing for a while and then starting to do other things.

Sometimes I felt inspired to play guitar for an hour or two and other times just for a minute. Did I have goals or not?

I know that I was developing as a guitarist quite fast and I think it must have been something in my way of playing and practicing guitar that was good.

I believe that some of the reasons for my progress during those early days of my learn to play guitar career were:

1. I felt no pressure to become an accomplished guitarist. I just felt the joy of sitting down with my guitar trying to find out the treasuries in the land of music.

2. My father was a guitar teacher giving me lessons at times and I always heard him play guitar in our home. Other guitarists visited our home many times and these visits inspired me a lot.

3. I never felt a pressure to play fast and thereby building tensions by playing too fast. This is one of the big mistakes beginning guitarist and even accomplished guitarists sometimes make.

4. As I mentioned previously I did a lot of other things besides playing guitar and I guess all these things I was involved in kept my mind quite healthy and helped me retain my joy when I learned to play guitar.

I guess in a sense I had goals that was not so apparent to me that directed me towards somewhere even if I was quite content being on the road of progress towards guitar land.

Can you learn something from my early guitar experiences? At least you can learn the following:

1. When learning to play guitar always remember to enjoy the act of playing without thinking too much on what you can or cannot do as a guitarist.

2. Try to associate with good musicians and guitarists that inspire you to play musically and that give you the motivation to learn to play new things on your guitar.

3. Beware of playing too fast on your guitar. There is a risk of building up muscle tensions and thereby actually reducing your ability to play fast. A remedy for this and a way to tame yourself is to use a metronome at a low tempo to reduce your speed to a level where you can play your guitar in a relaxed manner.

4. To become an interesting guitarist and musician you might benefit from being involved in other activities like listening to good music, having another hobby, reading good books, assiciate with other people and more.

Do you have to have goals to become a good guitarist? Well, even if you don't have learn to play guitar goals in the ordinary sense you can help yourself to play everyday by having easy access to your guitar.
