I was once asked by a friend ?how did you learn to play the guitar?

Well that?s a very good question, and I really had to give it some thought, because it is so long ago, more than 40 years, that I had almost forget how and when I learned.

So in this Article I am going to reveal my secret. But then I will also reveal to you how I would go about it today.

So just how did I learn. Well it?s a long story, but to be reasonably brief, the when is just as important as the how. You see, I learned whilst I was serving the British Army in Germany in the early 1960?s. As you will all know, that was the hey day of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and also in America we had Elvis and buddy Holly and All those early Rock?n?roll stars, far too many to mention here. So that?s the When, and I suppose it?s also the why, but the How!

I really wanted to learn to play the electric guitar but I could not afford one, being a young ?squaddie? in those we did not get paid very much. So I had to buy a cheap acoustic Guitar to learn on. I bought my first guitar in a Music Shop in Munchengladbach in Germany, and it came with a ?Play in Day? book which was written by Burt Weedon who was at the time one of the top guitarists in the World. The only Problem was it was all in German. However not to daunted, I proceeded to learn to play the chords by just looking at the pictures of the Chords shapes.

This Method actually worked well as it also gave you a few simple songs and the chords needed to play along with the song. I remember the first song I ever learned was the Old evergreen ?Home, home on the Range? by I think it was Roy Rodgers. Now that really makes me feel old.

So there you have it, my secret to how I initially learned to play the guitar. Yes, I taught myself with the help of ? Burt Weedon?s? ?play in a Day? book (written in German !)

Soon after that I saved up and started to play with a few friends in the Barracks and we formed our own Group. Once we had played a few Gigs in Local Bars we had enough money to start buying electric guitars and amplifiers and the ?proper? gear.

I have been playing the Guitar on and off ever since then, playing in a few groups in Germany, Paris and the UK.

So to come back to my original point, how would I learn to play today? Well I would initially recommend that you get professional help. That has to be the best method for anyone starting out today. The reason I say this is that with a one to one tutor you learn everything about the guitar, and also you will learn to read music too. (I still can?t read to this day! my excuse! never had time.)

Now I realise that most people don?t have that kind of money or commitment. So the next best thing to do is buy yourself a good teaching system. Now Burt Weedon?s Book was great in the 60,s but time has moved on and nowadays we have the benefit of the Internet.

There are literally hundreds of e-books and downloadable systems that you can get your hands on. I have read many of them, and for my money I would recommend that this is definitely the best method. Just be careful that you pick a system that suits the style of music you are interested in, and go from there.

I have enjoyed my Guitar for over 40 Years and I hope that you too will learn to not only play the guitar, but learn to love playing the guitar. If you learn properly at the start, learn slowly and practice well, join in with others, and you will grow to love not only the music but the social life that comes with meeting some really nice people who share a similar passion.

When you start with something new, you are usually so eager to jump into this new venture with both feet that you forget that every subject has its own basic information and way of doing things. When you start learning guitar playing, you want to be the new sensation on the hit charts within one day. Woa ? pull in the reigns. Learn the guitar basics first. Why? You will be a better guitar player later on. Even the masters of the guitar started off with the basics and progressed from there. There are many things that are included when you learn guitar basics: the chords, the scales, the fingering, but perhaps most importantly, you need to learn all of the different parts of the guitar.

How is a guitar constructed?

One of the basic reasons to learn guitar basics, is to know the different parts of a guitar. As you progress, you will meet different terms for the parts of a guitar and if you do not know those terms, you can find yourself struggling to learn the guitar. First of all, you should know what the body of the guitar is:

1. The guitar?s body is the large wooden part of the guitar.

2. The thin part of the guitar that is connected to the body of the guitar is called the neck.

3. The bridge is located on the body of the guitar near the hole.

4. The strings of the guitar begin at the bridge and end at the pegs, which is located on the head of the guitar.

5. The head of the guitar is on the end of the neck not connected to the body.

6. There are small metal pieces located at various intervals along the neck of the guitar. These metal pieces are called the frets. When the player presses the strings into the frets at various intervals, the strings vibrate and produce different pitches.

The way you hold the guitar differs for nearly every type of song you play on a guitar. If you are right handed, your right hand is your strumming hand. Thus, you hold your guitar so that your right hand rests on the strings of the guitar above the hole. This means that your left hand is your picking hand, and your left hand should rest on the neck of the guitar. If you are left handed, then you should use these directions as well, only reversed.

When first starting to learn guitar chords, one of the most difficult tasks to master is to get your fingers to do what you want them to do. Independence does not come easily. This is why most beginning guitar players focus on and learn the most commonly used guitar chords and scales and proceed to use those handful of chords for the rest of their life.

Most guitarists do not experiment with different areas of the guitar or try adding or subtracting a note or two to the original chord so as to give some hint of originality or a personal style, that is why a lot of guitar music around today is so uninspiring and un-original.

Once guitar players get a few licks and tricks under their belt they become lazy. When you consider the combinations that are available from just one chord in one position on the neck, it is absolutely mind boggling, let alone the hundreds of other positions and variations available. Just by experimenting with one chord shape at a different starting place on the fretboard can take your mind and fingers to uncharted areas you could not have conceived of before.

Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider breaking out of old patterns and learning guitar chords in a new key.

1. Inspiration can come immediately from taking one of your most prized over used chords and moving it over one fret to a new key. You probably will have to re-arrange your fingers to accommodate the new shape, but persevere with it, this new chord is no harder than any chord you have learnt so far. Now try moving all of the chords to this new key. Now you have just doubled your fretboard knowledge.

2. Play through those chords and just listen to the sound those new ?shapes? are making in the new position. You are breathing new life into your tired, worn out, over used chords. Remember that discovering new, original ideas and sounds is part of why guitar playing can be so much fun in the first place.

3. If you have a song that you know quite well, transpose those chords to another key. What you will find is that the song can have a different feel and take on a whole new life of its own.

Learning new guitar chords doesn?t have to be a chore, if you decided to learn just one new chord per month, you will be in front of most of the guitar players on the planet. Most people who learn to play guitar, usually play for a lifetime. I have never met any guitar player that played for a year or two then declared they didn?t like playing the guitar and just stopped. It is an ongoing pursuit, a skill to be mastered over the course of a lifetime, something to be enjoyed.

I know that you enjoy the chords that you are already playing, but if you break out of the same old guitar chords and scales that you play all the time, I promise you, you can rediscover all the amazing feelings of why you started to play guitar all over again.
